WHO
A strong woman determined to improve the life quality of children
Meet Johlenny, our local collaborator in the marginalized village of Martina Bustos, entirely surrounded by a landfill. Mix cement, move walls and dig holes to repair and enhance the nutrition center for village kids. During nightly circle, reflect on how you can create a positive community and ecological footprint back home as you are doing here.
WHERE
Isolated rural villages in the Andes
Oyacachi, a tiny village perched high in the Andes outside of Quito, is a model for our service partner communities. Needs abound, from improving the school building to lending a hand with the elderwood reforestation program. Community leader Hector brings locals together to welcome our groups, work together, and celebrate at the end of the day with a hot cup of tea and homemade bizcochos.
WHY
Helping communities achieve their goals
Setting up solar panels to bring electricity to a tiny school in a remote indigenous community, installing greywater management systems, or creating community gardens- we collaborate with local leaders to achieve their goals for improving their community. We connect our students with local kids and work hand in hand to leave a positive impact in communities where we have long standing relationships. We aim to inspire young folks to serve communities for life, not just as a one-off.
Service Learning: SAMPLE ITINERARY
We customize each experience… options are endless!
DAY 1: Owning your Experience
Welcome to Peru! Your guides introduce the Story Approach & Expedition Mentality, and our first nightly reflection circle empowers students to be fully engaged in their experience here.
DAY 2: EXPLORING CULTURAL TRADITIONS: LIMA TO CUSCO
After a quick in-country flight, begin our exploration of Cusco. Explore the great temple of the sun, known as Qoricancha- a sacred and treasured Inca structure. At the time the conquistadors arrived, the temple was full of so much gold that it took weeks to melt it all for shipment to Spain. We continue the tour stopping along the ancient Inca streets as our local guides put history and the melting pot of cultures in context.
DAY 3, 4, 5, 6: COMMUNITY SERVICE: LEAVING A POSITIVE TRACE; CALLIPATA.
Head out of Cusco and across the Andes to the remote village of Callipata. This small village is home to trail porters who trace their lineage to the Incas. Here we will help the locals for the next several days to build mud-brick livestock shelters. Due to changes in global weather patterns, local farmers have found it necessary to shift from an agrarian lifestyle to animal husbandry in order to maintain basic standards of living for their families. During these days we will have the opportunity to spend time with the community members, cook, construct side by side and connect with our local hosts.
With Chill Expeditions, I love that our days are packed and we are having fun and we are together throughout our journey. I also love that Chill Expeditions is always seeking to move forward and improve. I highly recommend this company for every teacher, be it Spanish, Biology, other Sciences, or Community Service Clubs. I look forward to traveling with them for years to come!
